British scientists found some German U-boats had experimental or advanced equipment.
Two were found to have rubber tiles on their hulls to absorb Asdic transmissions.
U 1171 was used by the Royal Navy to test how effective this was.
The tests were carried out in Loch Goil.
U 1171 became known as the White Puma
due to the Schnorchel mast being coated with aluminized sponge rubber.
It was hoped this would absorb RDF transmissions. U 1171 was also fitted with automatic depth-keeping gear.
